Why am I experiencing Sciatica?
Sciatica can come on gradually, often due to repetitive poor sitting postures at work, at home, or when driving, poor chair ergonomics, overload to your back with manual work, or even repetitive back movements during sport or activity.
Sciatica can also come on after a specific incident, such as bending over, reaching for something, or lifting a heavy object.
Sciatica is typically due to either a slipped disc in your back, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, or piriformis syndrome.
A slipped disc is where the soft cushion of tissue, called a disc, which sits between the vertebrae in your lumbar spine and normally acts as a shock absorber, bulges out of place. If the slipped disc is large, then it can compress the sciatic nerve exiting your back.
A slipped disc can also be referred to as a disc herniation, a disc protrusion, a disc prolapse, or a disc bulge.
Spinal stenosis is where a narrowing occurs in a small hole where the sciatic nerve exits your spine, compressing the sciatic nerve.
Spondylolisthesis is where one of the bones in your lumbar spine slips out of position, compressing the sciatic nerve.
Piriformis syndrome is where the piriformis muscle, sitting deep in your buttock, becomes tight, tense and traps the sciatic nerve.
Any of these above factors result in the sciatic nerve being compressed, leading to sciatica, which is characterised by pins and needles, numbness, or weakness, running down one or both of your legs.
