What is ACDF?

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a surgery to remove a herniated or degenerative disc in the neck. This procedure is only considered failing non invasive treatments such as Physiotherapy and medication.

Patients often present with pain, weakness, numbness and tingling in their arms which is caused by irritation to the spinal cord or nerve root from a damaged disc or bony spurs (osteophytes).

ACDF surgery can require approximately 3-6 months recovery, in which your Physiotherapist can be very helpful!

Physiotherapy will focus on improving your cervical and scapular stability, including range of movement and strengthening exercises. They can also offer you advice on pain relief. Further treatment will target your return to functional activity, including co-ordination and exercise progressions for further stabilisation.Â
