Help Me, I’m Trapped: Trapped Nerve

Help Me, I’m Trapped: Trapped Nerve

Chances of getting a trapped nerve are slim, however when you do, it is not fun or pleasant.

Let us show you why this could happen and how we can help!

Anatomy

Our nervous system is divided between the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (nerves that branch out of the spinal cord).

The main role of the nervous system is to carry information to and from the brain. Think of the nervous system as the “Royal Mail” of our body!

Fun Fact

There are more nerve cells in the human brain than there are stars in the Milky Way Galaxy!

Injury

The definition of a trapped nerve is when the nerve is compressed by a surrounding tissue, such as a muscle, or a bone. When it gets trapped, the nerve loses it’s mobility and flexibility.

When this happens, the nerve will give you pain, and will cry out for help to escape it’s entrapment!

Furthermore, in being trapped, this can actually result in repetitive trauma to that nerve, which may then damage the layers surrounding the nerve that help with with the transmission of messages.

Repetitive trauma to a nerve can typically cause localised or referred pain, loss of function, pins and needles, numbness, muscle weakness and a burning sensation around your arms and legs.

Our Solution

With adequate and effective treatment, a trapped nerve can be released, and resolved, within a matter of weeks!

Treatment may include spinal mobilisations to loosen a specific segment of the spine where the nerve is trapped.

It may also include acupuncture to stimulate the nerve and fully restore the nerve’s signals.

Furthermore, a specific home exercise program, designed to reduce your pain, improve your mobility and restore nerve function, can be really helpful.

Finally, soft tissue massage can be used to loosen up the musculature around the trapped nerve.

Case Study

Vanita came to us following a shoulder injury, which resulted in time off work, and severe pain. After being treated by one of our experts, Vanita made a full recovery within 6 sessions.

Here is what Vanita had to say about her journey with us! 🙂

“Following a shoulder injury which left me without function of my left shoulder and considerable time off work. I found the Southampton clinic online and i couldn’t have been happier with my decision, although due to Covid i had a long wait and felt quite dismissed once i’d seen them. I cannot recommend Jonny enough, he is clearly passionate about what he does and is determined to get the best outcome. After 6 sessions my shoulder was significantly improved, i don’t suffer from chronic nerve or impingement issues, my only regret is not booking sooner. I cannot thank you enough Jonny!” Vanita SG
