Ligament injuries and treatment options!

The Amazing World of Human Anatomy: Ligaments!

We’ve all heard of ligaments, but have you ever wondered what they are and how they can get injured?

Let us show you!

Anatomy

Ligaments are short bands of tough elastic tissue, made up of an army of individual fibres!

Ligaments connect our bones together and provide support for our joints by passively limiting the amount of movement between your bones.

Fun Fact

The human body has approximately 900 ligaments!

Injury

Even if ligaments are tough and flexible, they could sustain injuries just like any other part of our body!

The most common ligament injuries are the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) which is located in the knee and the anterior talo-fibular ligament (ATFL) located in the ankle.

The ACL is often injured due to a sudden twisting motion of the knee or because of an incident such as a football tackle or a road accident.

The ATFL is often injured due to rolling of the ankle during sport or activity.

Often ACL injuries do not cause pain, however they might cause a popping sound as the injury occurs, followed by giving way of the knee and swelling.

ATFL injuries on the contrary, often cause a lot of pain, might cause a popping sound too and often lead to giving way of the ankle and swelling.

Solution

Do you think you might have injured your ACL?

Don’t worry, we have the right solutions and the best experts to recover your knee!

One of the most effective ways to treat an ACL injury is by doing a personalised strength and conditioning program.

The strength and conditioning program will be accompanied by sessions of sports massage which will provide a good way to treat any tightness you might encounter due to your hard work!

Case Study

Jo Coulthard came to us following a severe injury to the ankle which involved ligaments and muscles. After a good and well detailed Strength and Conditioning plan with our expert Anna, Jo made a full recovery and achieved his goals.

Here is what Jo had to say about his experience with us!

“Had a severe injury to my ankle in April 2020, after 6months of doing what the doctor said the ankle was still very painful, so much so went to A and E in July. I searched for a physical therapy near me with good reviews. I haven’t been disappointed, Anna in the Southampton branch worked with me to help the torn ligaments and other muscles that had been compensating and had issues. Anna is very friendly and explains everything in layman’s terms, we have had fun nick naming some exercise too! The Physi app they use is really helpful with videos showing you how to do them. I’m continuing with them to build on strength and stamina, it’s been a long road to get to where I am physically and active couldn’t be happier. Thank you Anna and see you soon!”
